Seagate Intros 1TB-Per-Platter Barracuda HDDs, Works on Desktop Hybrid Drive

Ultimas noticias de Hardware Seagate-Intros-1TB-Per-Platter-Barracuda-HDDs-Works-on-Desktop-Hybrid-Drive-2

Ultimas noticias de Hardware Seagate-Intros-1TB-Per-Platter-Barracuda-HDDs-Works-on-Desktop-Hybrid-Drive-3

Seagate has just announced that it has refreshed its Barracuda HDD product family to feature the new 1TB platter technology that was introduced with its GoFlex external drives enabling these to deliver better overall performance.

Together with the new drives, Seagate also introduced a new naming scheme, which unites all of its previous desktop HDD ranges (Barracuda Green, Barracuda, and Barracuda XT) under the Barracuda name.

This new drive lineup features from top to bottom 7200RPM drives with 1TB platters and a faster cache. This includes the company's low-power HDD range that previously included 5900RPM drives.

Seagate has motivated this decision by saying that low-power drives don't deliver meaningful power savings in desktop environments.

The new caching technology introduced by Seagate in the Barracuda line goes by the name of OptiCache and is actually a tandem between a new dual-core controller chip built with 40-nm process technology and a 64MB cache that can be addressed as a a single unit.

This is an important improvement over the previous method of splitting the cache into chucks used in the company's older HDD models, as it can speed up cache access speeds significantly.

Thanks to these new changes, the new Barracuda hard drives are capable of achieving sequential read speeds of up to 210MB/s, while write speeds can go as high as 156MB/s.

"A simpler desktop drive product family is exactly what Seagate customers are asking for," said Scott Horn, vice president of Marketing at Seagate.

"The new Barracuda family reflects the reality that end-users want a full range of hard drive capacities and as much performance as we can give them to help manage and store massive amounts of digital content.

“In addition, our OEM and channel customers want to reduce overhead costs by having fewer product lines to qualify and manage in their inventory," concluded the company's rep.

The Barracuda drives will be available in capacities ranging from 1TB to 3TB, with prices going from $71.99 to $179.99 (52.6 to 131.5 EUR). These HDDs will also be joined by a 4TB model in the near future.

In addition, Seagate has revealed to Tech Report that the company is also working on developing a hybrid drive that pairs mechanical and solid-state storage together and which will take the place of the Barracuda XT products.

Core i7-3770K Retail Boxes Pictured, TDP 95W, Overclocks Worse Than Sandy Bridge?

Here are the first pictures of retail boxes of Intel's Core i7-3770K "Ivy Bridge" processors in the LGA1155 package. Pictured below are boxes sourced from a Chinese distributor. Regional branding aside, the box-art hasn't changed from that of the 2nd Generation Core processor family, even the die-shot CGI in the center hasn't changed, which is a missed opportunity. Intel could have used art inspired by the Ivy Bridge silicon, which could have helped identify the new chips easier. The box simply marks the model number "3770K" and socket type "LGA1155" on the key sticker.

The side sticker is where the action is. We know from countless earlier reports, including Intel's RetailEdge marketing material that the TDP rating of "Ivy Bridge" quad-core parts, including the i7-3770K, was rated to be 77W. The sticker on retail i7-3770K, however, tells a different story. The TDP is rated at 95W, on par with previous-generation parts such as i7-2700K. The S-spec number is revealed to be "SR0PL". Before such an important CPU launch as "Ivy Bridge", it's hard to control pre-launch proliferation of retail parts to people who are not NDA signatories. Such people have put the i7-3770K through overclocking, and voices are getting louder that the i7-3770K is a worse overclocker than previous-generation "Sandy Bridge". The chip was found to get too hot, too soon, when overclocking.

Intel Xeon E3 "Ivy Bridge" Processors Start Shipping in June

Intel is expected to start shipping Xeon E3 processors based on 22 nm "Ivy Bridge" silicon within June, according to a DigiTimes report. A key feature of the new Xeon chips driving its advent is support for PCI-Express 3.0, which could greatly increase bandwidth for compatible add-on cards and controllers. Ivy Bridge allows PCI-Express lanes from the processor root complex to be split into x16, x8, and even x4 links, which greatly increase bandwidth from previous-generation PCI-Express 2.0 bus. Built in the LGA1155 package, the new Xeon chips will be compatible with existing platforms that run Xeon Sandy Bridge processors, as well as new lines of server/workstation motherboards that feature PCI-Express 3.0 expansion. We know from a slightly older report that Intel will launch low-voltage Xeon processors around this time.

PowerColor Intros Radeon HD 7750 Go! Green Passive-Cooled, Energy-Efficient VGA

PowerColor launched its second Radeon HD 7750 graphics card, a Go! Green variant. Models of this series tend to be energy-efficient (with slightly lowered voltages, reducing power draw), while maintaining reference clock speeds. Another striking feature of Go! Green variants is their silent passive-heatsink that cools the GPU and VRM. To maintain high temperature tolerance, and energy-efficiency, PowerColor tends to employ high-grade voltage regulation components on their Go! Green cards. In case of this card, it is said to utilize PowerPAK SO-8 MOSFETs, shielded chokes, and conductive-polymer capacitors.

The card sticks to reference clock speeds of 800 MHz (core) and 1125 MHz / 4.50 GHz effective (memory), packs 512 Graphics CoreNext stream processors, and 1 GB of GDDR5 memory over a 128-bit wide memory interface. The cooler is similar to the one featured on previous-generation Go! Green cards from PowerColor, it consists of a dense aluminum fin heatsink, to which heat is conveyed by copper heat pipes that draw head directly off the core. Heat dissipation happens passively. Expect the card to charge a tiny premium over other Radeon HD 7750 cards in the market.

G.Skill Unveils Trident X Series DDR3-2400 MHz Modular-Heatsink Overclocking Memory

G.Skill unveiled its newest line of memory for extreme overclocking, the Trident X. Its launch is timed to follow that of Intel's Core "Ivy Bridge" processor family, and is optimized for 7-series chipset motherboards (due to their support of latest Intel XMP 1.3 specification). Pictured below is what Trident X series modules look like: a black PCB with a slightly long black metal heatsink, which has a detachable crown heatsink (red). One can notice a slot for heat pipes in the juncture between the crown heatsink and the module's main heatsink.

Aesthetically, the Trident X series modules don a black+red color scheme, which goes well with the black+red motherboard in the background (in the press-shot). Pictured below are the DDR3-2400 MHz (PC3-19200) modules in dual-channel configuration. The XMP profile runs the module at its 2400 MHz DDR (1200 MHz real) speed, with timings of 10-12-12-31T, and DRAM voltage of 1.65V. The modules will be available in various other speed/timing configurations, and in densities of 4 GB and 8 GB, making up for 8 GB and 16 GB dual-channel kits, for the new "Ivy Bridge" platform; 16 GB and 32 GB quad-channel kits for the Sandy Bridge-E platform. The older Sandy Bridge LGA1155 platform might not be 100% compatible, since it lacks XMP 1.3 support. G.Skill Trident X will be formally announced on May 4.

GIGABYTE WindForce 5X Cooling Solution on GTX 680 SOC Pictured - 5 Fan Mayhem

Here are the first pictures of GIGABYTE's new WindForce 5X graphics card cooling solution, which will likely feature on its upcoming GeForce GTX 680 SuperOverclock graphics card. It turns out that the "5X" in its name indeed denotes the presence of five fans. It's the arrangement of the fans that is its defining feature. While most graphics cards have their fan(s) arranged along the plane of the PCB, on the obverse side of the card, the WindForce 5X cooler has five 40 mm fans (the ones usually featured in rack servers) arranged perpendicular to the plane of the PCB, on the top side of the card.

This unique arrangement of fans ensures that hot air from the heatsinks are ventilated in a single direction and not all over the card (like with WindForce 3X), heating other components on the motherboard. The front-side of the card has just a swanky-looking molded brushed aluminum shroud. On the flip-side, the card spans across three expansion slots, and appears to be both taller and longer than reference design. GIGABYTE's GeForce GTX 680, featuring this cooling solution, and aggressive clock speeds, will be launched very soon.

Armored with a new airflow circulation design

Forged with the military spirit in mind, the new Thermal Armor design with dual turbo fans keeps the SABERTOOTH Z77 motherboard running cool, quiet and most importantly, stable. A specially designed area of Thermal Armor safeguards sensitive VRM components by directing hot air away from them and the motherboard by means of a smart shunt funneling design. Specialized heat pipes effectively expedite thermal removal helping to ensure that temperatures stay low, while a dedicated I/O cover fan draws additional cold air in and expels even more heat for improved stability, leading to a longer board lifespan. The newest feature of the Thermal Armor design comes in the form of special convection holes placed at critical areas of the motherboard to facilitate airflow from turbo fans to the underside, providing additional cooling.

Defense against dust buildup

Dust Defender is an additional form of protection that works similarly to the military-inspired Thermal Armor, but instead of keeping temperatures low, it keeps system damaging dust at bay from peripheral ports and slots. After extended computer usage, excessive buildup of dust can occur on contact points within slots and connection ports; these can compromise data transfer speeds, negating the benefits of expensive and critical components such as graphics cards. The custom-designed TUF shielding covers resists particulate entry, effectively extending PCIe, RAM and USB connection life while also promoting better performance.

Cool down with Thermal Radar and new Fan Overtime function

Featured in previous SABERTOOTH models, Thermal Radar monitors temperatures in critical parts of the motherboard in real time, automatically adjusting fan speeds to make sure the system maintains a high level of stability. The new Thermal Radar comes with a new feature called Fan Overtime, which keeps the two turbo fans running a few minutes post shutdown on standby power to remove any remaining heat. By expelling any high temperatures that are still lingering in the case where they can cause damage, it extends system longevity, dropping heat by as much as 7°C in just ten minutes. Users can automatically shut off fans using either preset or manually-selected temperature thresholds, or based on time after shut down.
